The Heart of Resilience: Strength Beyond Ourselves

At Resilience Rise Retreat, we believe resilience is more than just “bouncing back.” Resilience is the inner strength to face adversity, adapt, and grow stronger through life’s challenges. For young people—and for all of us—it’s not about avoiding hardship but about finding ways to persevere, heal, and thrive when life doesn’t go as planned.
Resilience is built on three foundations:
Trust – believing in something greater than the challenge itself.
Purpose – knowing that your life has meaning, even in difficult seasons.
Hope – holding on to light even when circumstances feel heavy.
For me, resilience is not a theory—it is lived experience.
My Story of Resilience
I didn’t grow up with the security many children have. I was not raised by my biological parents, and my early years were shaped in a poor province in the Philippines where resources were limited, but faith was abundant. From a very young age, I learned that the foundation of life was not in material things, but in God.
I was raised with a deep understanding that life’s purpose is to serve God and that in every season, we can rely on Him. My childhood was shaped by prayer—beginning each day with prayer, ending with gratitude in prayer, and learning to trust God in between.
Although my life circumstances might have appeared fragile to others, they became the soil where resilience grew. My resilience was not cultivated because I was strong on my own. Rather, it came from a daily reliance on God, who gave me strength beyond what I could carry.
Looking back, I see how faith anchored me through challenges. Being away from my parents taught me to rely on God as my ultimate source of comfort and guidance. Living in humble conditions taught me gratitude and the value of community. Dedicating my early life to fulfilling my duties inside the church grounded me in purpose. All these experiences became building blocks of resilience—a resilience that is not about self-sufficiency, but about divine sufficiency.
Why This Matters for Teens Today
Today’s young people face pressures and challenges that often feel overwhelming—academic stress, social pressures, identity struggles, and emotional ups and downs. At Resilience Rise Retreat, we guide teens to see resilience not just as “getting over” challenges but as growing through them.
Just as my strength came not from myself but from God’s provision, teens too can discover that resilience is not about perfection or always feeling strong. It’s about learning to lean on trusted supports—whether that’s faith, family, mentors, or healthy coping strategies—and building a foundation they can return to in times of struggle.
As the Bible reminds us: "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.” – Isaiah 40:31
This verse captures the heart of resilience—not depending on our own strength, but on God’s unfailing power.
Resilience at the Core of Our Retreat
Resilience Rise Retreat is built on this vision: to help teens and their families cultivate resilience in a safe, nurturing, and faith-rooted environment. We create space for young people to learn tools for emotional regulation, to connect deeply with others, and to develop confidence and hope for the future.
Just as I found my strength through faith and community growing up, we want every young person to walk away from our retreat knowing:
They are not alone.
They can rise above challenges.
Their resilience is real and growing.
Final Reflection
Resilience isn’t about being unbreakable. It’s about knowing that even when life bends us, we can rise again. For me, that resilience has always been grounded in God’s strength, and it’s that same hope and strength we want to share with every family and teen who joins us at Resilience Rise Retreat.
Because resilience doesn’t mean we never fall—it means we rise, again and again, stronger and with purpose.
